The Advantages of Renting

Renting vs. buying—it’s the age-old debate.  While the “American Dream” may be to own a house, some of the things you have to do in order to own your own home aren’t quite so dream-like.  In fact, they can be down-right annoying.

However, for millions of Americans, renting is a very attractive alternative.  And why?  In short, because it provides them with the type of flexible, low-maintenance lifestyle that allows them more freedom and more time to do the things they enjoy.  Owning a house means you own the headaches that go along with that house.  Renting means somebody else gets the headaches.

And to illustrate this point, below are five main advantages that renting offers over buying:

  • It’s less costly—Buyers typically have to pluck down 10% of the cost of the house in the form of a down-payment.  Renters?  There is no down payment, just a security deposit.  And if the first month of rent is free, it’s almost as if the security deposit didn’t even exist.  And let’s not forget the fact that there’s no property tax to pay and that insurance costs are much lower.  Man, we could go on all day about this one!

  • No property value worries—And while we’re discussing property tax, a renter doesn’t have to concern themselves about fluctuating property values, either.  One less thing to worry about.

  • More freedom and mobility—Leases can be for a very short length of time, even month-to-month, if you so choose.  There’s no worrying about having to sell your house if you want to relocate for another job.

  • Less or no responsibility—Toilet doesn’t work?  Faucet is leaky?  No problem.  Call the landlord and have them fix it.  And while you’re at it, have them mow the lawn and shovel the sidewalk, too.  After all, your favorite television show is on.

  • Rent is a fixed cost—Unlike some mortgages, especially Adjustable Rate Mortgages, your rent stays the same for the duration of your lease.  In addition, some apartments even include utilities with the cost of the rent.  So you have fewer checks to write, less to keep track of, and even more time on your hands.

So as you can see, owning a house isn’t for everybody.  If you’re looking for fewer costs, fewer worries, fewer responsibilities, more freedom, and more flexibility, then renting is clearly the way to go.
